CARRY ME - Opening October 11 at Madrona Gallery, Victoria
This series takes inspiration from the dramatic mountainsides of the coast and the patterns created by that forward-stacking of shapes. The paintings in "Carry Me" consider the ability of a painting to transport the viewer or the painter. For the viewer, to enter a different reality. For the painter, to be able to let go of preconceived ideas and judgements to allow the painting to lead the way. It could also reference a wish to return to the feelings of childhood, the need to be carried and protected.
Visually, this series breaks from the rules of landscape and focuses on the graphic elements of pattern, using true, flat colours to create vibrant contrast and activity. Iconic elements combine notions of the sublime and supernatural to emphasize the magical experience of the forest and coast.
