This colouring page was the result of a meeting of qathet artists and activists coming together to collaborate on ideas to positively and creatively address the name change conversation currently happening in Powell River. I was introduced to the word ǰɩšɩnəqʷaɬ, an Ayajuthem (language of Tla’amin and other First Nations) word loosely meaning 'rays of light'. The first part of the the word means 'legs'. I drew a colouring sheet making this double meaning literal, an hopefully, humorous.

This word shows us how language is not simply words. Language also carries unique ways to see, describe, and be in the world. The Ayajuthem language is from right here, and is informed by and connected to the land we inhabit.

Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action 14. i. Aboriginal languages are a fundamental and valued element of Canadian culture and society, and there is an urgency to preserve them.

United Nations Declaration Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Article 13: Indigenous peoples have the right to revitalize, use, develop and transmit to future generations their histories, languages, oral traditions, philosophies, writing systems and literatures, and to designate and retain their own names for communities, places and persons.
